A MAN is reported to have sustained a head wound during a fight at a Royal Black Institution parade in Belfast.

Another man in his 70s also collapsed and was taken away by ambulance, police have said.

The disturbance took place as the Pride of Ardoyne Flute Band passed through the High Street area of the city just before 6pm on Saturday.

Members were taking part in the return parade during the 'Last Saturday' celebrations.

Up to 40 people were involved in the incident which erupted after a member of the public allegedly tried to grab a banner.

In a Facebook post, the band said "thugs attempted to rip the bannerette from our band".

They said they had defended their "colours" and saw off the perpetrators.

The band added that questions needed to be asked about PSNI response time.

Superintendent Lorraine Dobson, who was silver commander for the Belfast parades, said following reports of an incident "officers made their way on foot through the crowds of band members and spectators".

"Once at the scene we spoke with a number of people and recorded their details. Additional resources were sent to the scene but were not required as the incident ended quickly and the parade continued without further incident," she said.

“It was reported a man, aged in his 30s, had sustained an injury to his head but did not require medical assistance at the time.

“Whilst the police were in attendance, a man in his 70s collapsed and was taken away from the scene by ambulance."
