MEMBERS of the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) are to hold their annual Feast of the Assumption parade in Co Tyrone this weekend.

The border village of Aughnacloy will host this year's parade on Sunday.

Members of the order from across Ireland and further afield are expected to take part.

Up to 28 bands are listed to take part in the parade with up to 5,000 supporters expected.

Organised into divisions, members of the AOH take part in annual parades on St Patrick's Day and mark the Feast of the Assumption which falls on August 15.

A conservative Catholic organisation, it has close ties with St Mary’s Church in Aughnacloy with the local division having donated a station of the cross in the past.

This year’s parade comes in the wake of a fallout within the host county.

Former Tyrone president Gerry McGeough was expelled from the organisation after a meeting of the National Board of Erin in June.

Sources have told the Irish News that some AOH bands have decided not to take part in this year’s Aughnacloy parade partly in protest at the decision.

It is understood that several AOH divisions in Tyrone have complained to the Board of Erin about Mr McGeough’s expulsion and that the recent resignation of one Tyrone County board member is linked to the controversy.

The Aughnacloy parade begins at 3pm on at the GAA grounds on the Monaghan road.
