A woman who was rescued from a sinking car in Lough Erne in Co Fermanagh has died.

Police officers pulled the woman from the vehicle which had entered the water at Muckross Pier on the Boa Island Road in Kesh on Saturday June 15.

It happened at around 10.25pm. The woman was in her fifties and is understood to have been a mother of three who worked as a nurse and lived in Drumquin in Co Tyrone.

A PSNI patrol was in the area when police received a report that a car may have entered the water and two officers got into the water and were able to pull the woman out of the car.

Police said a third officer who arrived at the scene also got into the water to ensure no-one else was in the vehicle.

The three officers received hospital treatment.

The woman has three adult children and it is understood her daughter is living in Australia.
