ROADS closed in Belfast city centre since the Primark fire last August will reopen today to traffic.

The Department for Infrastructure (DfI) yesterday announced that the Castle Place junction would reopen along with nearby roads.

The area around Royal Avenue and Castle Junction has been closed since a massive fire engulfed Primark's flagship store at Bank Buildings on August 28.

While the area has been completely closed to traffic, in recent months a cordon in the area has been reduced allowing more pedestrian access.

Earlier this week the Tesco store, situated next to Primark, also reopened its doors for the first time since the blaze.

Now, roads around the area of Bank Buildings will also reopen to traffic.

A DfI statement on Twitter said: "The Castle Place junction next to Primark will reopen to traffic on the morning of 23rd May.

"New traffic lights will be in place and those permitted to access the city centre, such as bikes, buses, blue badge holders and delivery vehicles will now be able to travel from Royal Avenue to Castle Place or Donegall Place and from Castle Place to Donegall Place.

"Normal pedestrian facilities will also be available around the junction. Pedestrians are reminded to take care now that vehicles will again be using Royal Avenue, Donegall Place and Castle Place".
