A father-of-three who died in a work accident in Co Fermanagh was a family man who was "deeply loved and loving", mourners have been told.

Relatives and friends of Barry McQuaid gathered yesterday at St Davog's Church in Dromore, Co Tyrone for Requiem Mass for the 34-year-old.

It is understood the well-known builder died following an accident involving a digger on a site in the Ederney area on Friday.

Mr McQuaid was a strong supporter of Dromore St Dympna’s GFC and the family construction firm built a new stand at the club in 2016.

Active in the community, he also provided a grave digging service to the parish.

The Health and Safety Executive is investigating the death.

Fr Patrick MacEntee told those gathered for Requiem Mass that the sudden death of Mr McQuaid had been met with a "terrible sense of shock and loss".

"To his wife Edel he was a devoted husband, to Tess, Tommy and Sadie a doting father," he said.

"To Noel and Patricia, Margaret, a dutiful son and grandson, and to those who worked with him a skilled perfectionist for whom less than the best was unthinkable.

"It was because Barry was like this that so many of us took the liberty of calling on him to do things - we knew it would be right.

"The same applied to the graves in the parish which he did for quite a few years.

"His sensitivity to the feelings of people at that time, his respect for the graves and his determination that all would be left perfect was more appreciated maybe than he realised."

Fr MacEntee offered prayers that Mr McQuaid "though gone from sight" would be an "invisible guiding force" in his children's lives.

"Barry built a beautiful house and together with Edel created a beautiful home and family," he said.

"But of all the many creations in his life his children will, in the midst of the enduring pain of his loss, be a lasting comfort to her, his parents and everyone else.

"Yes, Barry was a builder. He built into his life family, faith and friends as well as business interests and much more.

"He built a reputation as one to be turned to, to sort out problems and get things done. To build is almost by definition to be positive. Barry was positive and his legacy is all of that."

Mr McQuaid was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery.
