A court has heard how a police officer lost control of an armoured car and crashed into a roundabout.

Matthew Dornan (30), whose address was given as PSNI Strand Road in Derry, admitted a charge of careless driving on August 14 last year.

Derry Magistrates Court was told that the vehicle - with Dornan driving and two passengers - approached a roundabout on the Skeoge Road at around 6.30am.

As it approached its speed increased to 60mph without explanation - 10 miles over the limit.

The car then hit the roundabout and careered across, coming to rest on the other side. Checks revealed no brakes had been applied.

The other two officers suffered neck and back injuries and damage to the vehicle was put at £17,000.

When interviewed Dornan said he was coming to the end of a shift spent mainly on ‘anti-terrorist’ duties.

He could not explain why he had increased speed and said the last thing he remembered was passing a cyclist just before the accident.

A defence solicitor said it was a clear case of a lapse of concentration, coming after three solid days of duty.

Deputy District Judge Oonagh Mullan said she was concerned about the increase in speed and said Dornan should have know better.

He was fined £250 and given six penalty points.
