THE funeral of a young woman who was knocked down and killed on a road in Co Antrim will take place today.

Requiem Mass for Shannon McQuillan will be held at St Joseph's Church in Dunloy at 11am today followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.

The 19-year-old and her boyfriend Owen McFerran (21) were struck by a van on the Moneynick Road in Toome at around 3.40am on Saturday.

Ms McQuillan, a law and criminology student from Dunloy, died as a result of the collision while Mr McFerran remained in a critical condition in the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast last night.

Before the collision, the teenager had been taken by ambulance from Magherafelt after she slipped on ice.

Two separate probes are investigating how the couple came to be hit by the van a short time after an incident on the way to hospital, which police attended.

The couple left the ambulance and were later knocked down.
