A MALE pedestrian has died in a road crash in Randalstown, Co Antrim.

The man was struck by a car on the Portglenone Road in the early hours of this morning.

Police received a report shortly after 1.15am that the man had been injured close to Groggan Primary School.

The Portglenone Road was closed overnight between the Mucklerammer Road and Coolsythe Road but has since reopened.

Police have appealed for information.

Sinn Féin South Antrim MLA Declan Kearney said: "Any death on our roads is one too many and this news will have shocked many people in the local area. 

“My deepest sympathies are with the family and friends of the man at this difficult time."

The DUP's Paul Girvan said: “This is very sad news and my heart goes out to the family and loved ones of the young man who has tragically lost his life.

The South Antrim MLA appealed for any witnesses to speak to the PSNI.”
