MOURNERS gathered in Co Down yesterday to remember a young teaching assistant who died in a choking tragedy.

The funeral of Sherry Campbell, from Groomsport, took place at St Comgall's Church in Bangor.

The 29-year-old, who worked with special needs children at Strangford College, was found by her father Shannon in the kitchen of the family home early on Thursday September 7.

Pupils from the school yesterday formed a guard of honour as Ms Campbell's remains were carried from the church.

Mourners were told of her "generosity, her kindness in school and her love of life".

There are now plans to remember the Co Down woman, an only child, through a foundation in her memory.

It will raise awareness of how to survive choking when alone, as well as fundraising to support her work at Strangford College.

"Sherry adored the children she worked with and it would mean so much to everyone that loved her if we could continue to provide assistance to a child with additional needs for years to come," an appeal on the JustGiving website said.

Ms Campbell was buried at Ballyvester Cemetery.
