A MAN in his twenties is recovering in hospital after he was attacked following a house party in south Belfast.

The man was assaulted after the party at Wauchope Court in the early hours of new year's day.

Police said the man was the victim of a "serious assault" some time between 3.45am and 5.45am.

He was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast for treatment.

Meanwhile, a man was threatened at knifepoint during an attempted robbery in north Belfast early on Monday.

The man was getting out of his car on Skegoneill Avenue at around 12.30am when he was approached by a man who tried to steal his bag. The attacker then pulled out a knife.

The victim was able to fend off the man. He was not injured but has been left badly shaken.

The attacker and another man who was with him drove off in a small white car in the direction of Shore Road.

Police appealed to anyone with information about either attack to contact detectives.

In a separate development, two men aged 32 and 34 who were arrested following an attack on two men in Portrush, Co Antrim, on new year's day were released on bail on Monday pending further inquiries.

A 44-year-old man and a 69-year-old man were treated in hospital after they were attacked in Dhu Varren Park at around 3am on Sunday.
