A SECURITY alert on the railway line at Lurgan has ended after “nothing untoward” was found.

The track had been closed following a report of the discovery of a suspect device at Lake Street.

Train services had been suspended and members of the public were advised to avoid the area.

Police say follow up searches show there is no danger and train services are expected to return to normal.

Translink has asked passengers to allow for subsequent delays.

DUP Councillor Carla Lockhart has blamed dissident republicans for the brief incident and said the security alert had brought "the good name of Lurgan into disrepute again".

"The message this Sunday morning is the people of Lurgan are fed up, frustrated and disgusted with this all to frequent activity," she said.

Sunday's disruption follows a series of incidents in Lake Street including one when a shot was fired at police and officers came under attack from over 100 petrol bombs.

Bricks, masonry and around 25 paintbombs were also thrown during five hours of violent trouble.

The PSNI said police were on the receiving end of "orchestrated, intense and prolonged violence".

A senior PSNI officer later claimed that dissident republicans in Lurgan are no better than terrorist group Daesh.

Following the violence, Craigavon police posted a meme entitled Dissident Dan, poking fun at those behind the violence.
