A man armed with a hatchet made off with cigarettes and cash after robbing a shop in north Belfast.

The man entered the premises on the Serpentine Road at around 7.30 on Sunday evening and threatened staff before leaving on foot.

It is believed the incident may be linked to a similar robbery on the Antrim Road.

The suspect was described as being of medium build with fair skin and was wearing a blue coat. A man was arrested later on Sunday evening and has since been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Detective Inspector Nigel Snoddy said, “ We are appealing for information about this incident and a further incident which occurred on Saturday 31st October at a shop on the Antrim Road. On this occasion a man entered the store at around 7.20pm, armed with a hammer, and demanded cash which was handed over by staff.

"Thankfully no-one was injured as a result of either incident and I am appealing for anyone who can assist us with our enquiries to contact detectives in Musgrave on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
