THE co-founder of the Women's Coalition is to speak at the Republic's joint committee on implementing the Good Friday Agreement.

Bronagh Hinds, founder of the NI Women's Rights Movement in the 1970s, who went on to help found the Women's Coalition in 1996, will speak of the roles of women in the north's peace process at the Oireachtas committee on Thursday.

She is the latest Agreement architect to speak at the committee, which has previously heard from figures including former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, former UK prime minister John Major, and ex-US senator George Mitchell.

Committee Cathaoirleach Deputy Fergus O’Dowd said Ms Hind's attendance would "highlight the role of women in the Northern Ireland peace process ahead of the 25th anniversary of the Agreement".

He said: "Recently, we discussed former Junior Foreign Affairs Minister Liz O’Donnell’s role as one of the few women involved on the political side of Irish negotiation table.

"The role of civil society groups such as the Northern Ireland Women’s Coalition highlight the role women have played in the Agreement and can be held up as a successful model of conflict resolution and women’s engagement in negotiating and promoting peace and security."
