ARMAGH City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council has said members attempted to mitigate the sharpest cost-of-living rise in recent memory by striking one of the lowest domestic rate increase this year in the north.

The increase of 5.96 percent means ratepayers will see an additional £2.04 per month on their bill.

The business rate increase meanwhile will amount to an increase of £30.50 per month.

On Monday, Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council struck the lowest domestic rate rise of 4.9 percent - the lowest in thr north this year, while Mid and East Antrim Borough Council agreed an increase of 5.43 percent.

They follow Belfast City Council striking a domestic rate increase of almost eight percent last month.

Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon mayor Paul Greenfield said: "Never in the history of Council have elected members and council officers faced as sharp an increase in the cost of living. The impact of high inflation together with unavoidable pressures regarding energy, fuel, contractual and salary increases has created a huge strain on the organisation and the 2023/24 budget."

He added: “The Council has tried to mitigate against these significant financial pressures through the introduction of a transformation and efficiency process as well as reducing budgets to ensure vital public services, the local business economy and future investment plans are protected and revitalised into the future."
