A TEENAGER killed in a road crash in Lisnaskea was the nephew of Fermanagh and South Tyrone Sinn Féin MLA Sean Lynch.

Piaras Mac Giolla Rua (18) from Donagh died in a three-car collision on Moorlough Road at 9.45pm on Monday.

A woman was taken to hospital for treatment to injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening.

Mr Lynch said the family are left devastated by the sudden death of the teenager who had got into his car to run “an errand”.

Piaras was the son of Sinn Féin’s Ruth Lynch, who sat on Fermanagh District Council for 15 years.

It is the second tragedy to hit the family in recent years. Mr Lynch said a cousin of Piaras died in New York in 2001 when he was in his twenties.

Mr Lynch said: “The family are grief-stricken. He had just run into town on an errand.”

Mr Lynch said his nephew had just started an apprenticeship and was looking to the future.

“He was one of the first to attend Bunscoil An Traonaigh, the Irish school that was established here,” he said.

“He had a new job, only got his driving licence a few months ago and got a car and tragically, these things happen. He was looking towards getting his independence.

“Last time we were altogether was only three weeks ago when we celebrated his grandfather’s 100th birthday. Most of the grandchildren came from all over Ireland. This tragic event now has set us back.

“He was a quiet lad. He was an only son and he was the oldest of the three. He was very close to his parents and was really great with his siblings and his cousins.”

Mr Lynch said the family are struggling to come to terms with Piaras’s death.

“I was with family all last night,” he said.

“We had to go to the scene. It’s a nightmare.”

Police have appealed for information and dashcam footage.
