A 90 year-old man has been returned for trial on a series of alleged sex abuse charges involving a child dating back to the 1980s.

Vincent Lewis of Annagher Road, Coalisland, Co Tyrone, is accused of five counts of gross indecency with a male child and a single count of indecent assault.

The offences are alleged to have occurred on various dates between 1983 and 1986.

A lawyer appearing for the Public Prosecution Service said there is a case to answer which was agreed by District Judge John Meehan.

Lewis, who appeared extremely frail and struggled to hear the proceedings, was permitted to remain seated in the dock throughout the proceedings.

He spoke only to confirm his identity and that he understood the charges.

He declined to call witnesses or give evidence on his own behalf.

Judge Meehan ordered a remand in continuing custody to appear for arraignment at Dungannon Crown Court on September 20.
