A CO Louth GAA player was last night described as "one of the kindest people" following his death while on holiday in Cyprus.

Conor Morgan (20), who was a member of the Dundalk Gaels team, died in the resort of Ayia Napa on Sunday.

The exact circumstances of his death are not yet known, but a death notice from his family said he had died "following a tragic accident".

It is understood police in Cyprus are investigating the possibility that Mr Morgan may have fallen from the balcony of a second-floor apartment. It is believed he had only arrived on the island on Friday.

Mr Morgan, a student at Dublin City University, was a talented Gaelic footballer and helped Dundalk Gaels to the senior championship final last year.

In a post on Facebook, the club said: "Dundalk Gaels regret to announce the death, while on holidays, of our club member, player and great friend Conor 'Morgie' Morgan.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family Paul, Blathnaid and Sarah at this incredibly difficult and devastating time."

Mr Morgan, a former pupil of De la Salle College, Dundalk, represented Louth at various underage levels, while he claimed a Lennon Cup medal with his school in 2014. He also played soccer with Quay Celtic.

A minute's silence was held in memory of Mr Morgan ahead of Louth’s All-Ireland qualifier in London on Sunday.

Tributes have also been paid to the popular student, who was remembered by friends and several GAA clubs in Co Louth.

One family friend said: "One of the kindest people I could remember gone way too young", while another said he was a "wee gentleman".

St Patrick's GFC said it offered its "deepest sympathies" to Mr Morgan's family and friends, while Newtown Blues GFC also expressed its "sincere condolences".
