A father-of-two who died a week after he was injured in a road traffic collision in Co Tyrone was "an amazing and funny person" who had a "heart of gold".

Police announced yesterday that 30-year-old Stephen McElwee had passed away on Thursday at Altnagelvin Hospital.

The young father, who had a son and a daughter, was injured in a road traffic collision in Sion Mills at around 11pm on Thursday, October 26.

The collision involved a black Volkswagen Passat and a blue Vauxhall Astra car.

Constable Trevor Fletcher from the Collision Investigation Unit said one man still remained in hospital in a serious condition following the crash.

Constable Fletcher said officers had also returned to the crash scene on Thursday night to speak "to motorists and passers-by as part of the ongoing investigation.

"We would like to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the incident".

Friends of Mr McElwee, who lived in Glebe and worked at Glen Fresh Foods Ltd, last night took to social media to pay tribute to the 30-year-old, who was described as "an amazing and funny person".

One friend said: "It's actually so hard to be saying goodbye to one of your friends ?? he was an amazing and funny person, & such a great father to your 2 kids.

"You were well known & everyone always had something good to say about you...we had really good memories together all of us a friends, prayers is with Nicole Smith & yer babies, ur mum, dad & brothers to get the strenght from somewhere cause it has been a really tough & emotional week for them, and will be over the coming days".

Another post read: "Rest in peace Stephen McElwee such a fun loving fella. Thoughts and prayers are with your family, friends and your two little kids" while another added: "Rest In Peace Stephen McElwee. A young man that I never seen without a smile on his face, taken well before his time. Thoughts are with his entire family".

Funeral Mass for Stephen McElwee will take place tomorrow (SUN) at 11am at St Theresa's Church in Sion Mills.

Interment will take place afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.
