A MAN charged with threatening to kill a priest following Mass at a church in the Glens of Antrim last Sunday is to be assessed by a "medical professional", a court heard yesterday.

Seamus Peter Murdock (41), whose address was given as Whitehill Road, Carnlough, appeared yesterday at Ballymena Magistrates Court via video link from Maghaberry Prison.

He is also charged with possessing an offensive weapon, namely a Stanley Knife, with intent to commit an indictable offence and with possessing the blade in a public place.

The charges relate to an alleged incident on Sunday April 30 after Mass at St John the Evangelist Church in Carnlough involving the priest Fr Dermot McKay.

A prosecutor told Ballymena Magistrates Court yesterday that Murdock had first appeared at a special sitting of the same court on Monday where he had been remanded in custody on the same charges.

In a further hearing yesterday the lawyer said a full file on the case had been requested by prosecutors.

Defence barrister Stephen Law said while the file is being progressed it is intended that the accused will be "assessed by a medical professional in light of the nature of the charges".

No application was made for bail and the case was adjourned until June when the accused will appear back at the same court via video link from prison.
