AN attack on a couple in Co Antrim which saw them tied to chairs and robbed of a "substantial" amount of money by an armed gang has been described as "extremely disturbing".

A man in his 70s was struck on the head with a bat during the incident, at a house in the Donaghbrook Drive area of Ballymoney at around 9.40pm on Monday.

It is understood the man's wife managed to break free and get to a neighbour's house.

The man received medical treatment at hospital but has since been released.

Meanwhile, police said there were also reports of shots fired in the vicinity of the burglary, in the Ballybrakes area, at around the same time as the incident and have appealed for information to establish if there is a link.

DUP assembly member Mervyn Storey said the incident was "extremely disturbing" .

"Those responsible are creating a sense of fear and I utterly condemn their behaviour," he said.

"It was a vile attack carried out by people who have no regard for those in the community".
