A north Belfast man remains in hospital two weeks after being burnt in a firework attack at his local take-away.

Ross Hayes (47) was struck by a firework rocket which was dropped through the doorway of the Oh My Co chip shop on Alliance Avenue on the evening of October 14.

The firework is believed to have exploded close to Mr Hayes, who was the only customer in the shop at the time.

He was taken to hospital to receive treatment for burn injuries. It is understood he underwent plastic surgery and remains in hospital.

The firework attack was widely condemned at the time with the victim's family "very distressed" according to local SDLP MLA Nichola Mallon.

"He simply went round to a local chippy... and never for one moment did anyone think that anything like this would happen.

"It's not clear what the motive was, but sadly around Halloween, we do see an increase in the use of fireworks," she said

Police have renewed their appeal for information into the incident, which occurred at approximately 9.15pm on Friday, October 14.

They have also released a picture of the firework used in the attack, which is not stocked in Northern Ireland.
