POLICE in Co Armagh have hit back at posters warning members of the public against reporting crime to them.

In recent months posters have appeared warning that: "People Should Not Inform".

They first appeared in May with the group behind the campaign, West Belfast Opposes Political Policing, saying they wanted to "raise awareness of the glaring contradictions" hidden with the judicial system.

Similar posters have since appeared in Co Tyrone and now in Craigavon, Co Armagh.

The move has prompted the PSNI in Craigavon to label those behind the message as "team stuck in the past".

In a Facebook post they highlighted the merits of 'informing', noting the public's help in recent weeks in tackling crime.

"Those arrests would not have been made and those lives may not have been saved if it weren't for 'informers'," they said.

Encourging the public to co-operate with the police they said: "Inform' is not a dirty word. It's a word you should be proud of. It means to speak out.

"It means to say 'enough is enough'. It means to take pride in your community and to do your bit to help your family, friends, neighbours and community.

"Keep talking. Keep informing. Keep speaking out," it said.

In April an image appeared on the 'International Wall' on the Falls Road, west Belfast depicting an IRA gunman beside the message "Loose talk costs lives".

At the time the message was condemned by SDLP councillor Tim Attwood as "open intimidation".
