THE funeral is due to take place on Saturday of six-year-old Joshua Kelly who died after being struck by a car close to his Co Down home.

Family and friends will gather in Portaferry to say their final farewells to the little boy.

Joshua, a pupil at St Finian's Primary School in Newtownards, was knocked down on the Scrabo Road on Wednesday.

The collision happened just metres from his home in the Co Down town.

Leading the tributes to him, his mother Clare described her son as "my beautiful boy".

A fund has been set up to support Joshua's devastated family with dozens of people rallying around them to help.

In the first day of the fund being established, £750 had already been raised.

Those behind the fundraiser said: "Joshua Kelly was sadly taken from us on January 20. He was a bright and fun little boy who was loved by many.

"Joshua was knocked down by a car and sadly can't be with his family anymore."

The Scrabo Residents' Association, which has been campaigning for improved safety on the road where the crash happened, has offered his condolences to the family.

In a statement on Friday, the organisation also said: "It is true we have been asking for traffic calming measures to be made along the Scrabo Road and in front of the Model School for a number of years now.

"We have concerns about the new roundabout, the traffic lights at Circular Road, daily delivery vans and lorries, the high volume of traffic and parking issues at the front of the school."

They said they have highlighted their concerns "many times" in recent years and would "continue pressing for these matters to be resolved".

Requiem Mass for Joshua will be held at St Patrick's Church, Ballyphilip on Saturday at 1pm.
