A CO Tyrone man has appeared in court on a series of charges including administering drugs to procure an abortion.

Philip Griffiths (24), whose address was given as Spout Walk, Fivemiletown, is facing eight charges against a woman, some of which are believed to have taken place over a number of years, culminating in December 2015.

It is alleged on a date between July 1 and 31, 2015, Griffiths used a kitchen knife as an offensive weapon with intent to commit grievous bodily harm, as well as damaging the woman’s bathroom door.

The allegation of administering drugs with intent to cause an abortion relates to a date between September 1 and October 31, 2015, when Griffiths is also accused of assaulting the woman.

There is another allegation of assault on November 26, 2015, with a charge of harassment the following day.

Griffiths is further alleged to have made threats to kill the victim and destroy her home, on dates between January 2012 and December 2015.

However, due to a delay in the Public Prosecution Service (PPS) attending Dungannon Magistrates Court for the hearing, the case was adjourned until next month.

Having been advised the PPS lawyer was delayed by some 40 minutes, Deputy District Judge Peter Magill told Griffiths on Thursday: “I don’t see why you need to hang around here.

"Your case is awaiting a full file but because prosecution aren’t here I can’t tell you when that is due.”

Griffiths was remanded on £300 bail and ordered to have no contact with the alleged victim. He is also banned from entering Fivemiletown.

The case is due back in court next month.
