A PRESS photographer escaped serious injury after a firework was thrown from the Windsor Park crowd during Northern Ireland's European qualifier against Romania on Saturday.

The incident occurred shortly in the second half of the game.

Police investigating are understood to have studied security footage from inside the stadium.

Photographer Darren Kidd said "he was lucky" to escape without serious injury after pushing away the device when it struck his neck.

Mr Kidd works for the Press Eye photography agency.

A steward was treated for shock at the side of the pitch.

Earlier in the match, stewards had to intervene when fighting broke out between rival factions of Romanian supporters housed in the South Stand.

A banner carrying a political slogan was also unfurled.

The Irish Football Association could face a fine from football's European governing body Uefa following the trouble.

Romania had previously been threatened with having to play Northern Ireland behind closed doors when the sides met in November last year.

It followed trouble which marred a draw between Romania and Hungary earlier in the qualifying campaign.

The match between Romania and Northern Ireland ended scoreless.
