Police have confirmed they were called to an "illegal band parade" involving children in east Belfast.

In one of the most unusual episodes of the marching season, footage posted on Facebook shows two young drummers, a friend with a Union flag and a girl performing cartwheels apparently holding up traffic.

The group can be seen walking along Greenore Street, off the Woodstock Road, last Saturday afternoon.

It is not known exactly how many children were involved or the route they took, but police said they escorted three youths home.

A spokesman said: "At 3.50pm police received a report of an illegal band parade in the Ardenlee Avenue area of east Belfast.

"Police attended and just after 5.05pm located three youths in the area having their own parade. The three youths were taken home to their parents by car where they were spoken to about the complaint received."

The parade divided reaction on social media, with some criticising the noise caused by the group and "kids walking on a busy road".

One wrote: "They should all be arrested and charged with blocking the road…well done PSNI."

However, others criticised the police response.

One Facebook user said: "The police must have been wee boring people when they were younger. They’re only having a bit of fun!"

Another added: "Unbelievable. No words to say; they are picking on kids enjoying being Protestant."
