AGREEMENT to remove UVF flags and loyalist emblems from a new social housing development has still not been reached, as 20 tenants get ready to move into their new homes.

The Irish News reported six weeks ago that loyalists had staked a claim on the site in Carryduff, operated by Oaklee Trinity housing association, by erecting UVF logos and flags and painting fences red, white and blue.

More than 40 homes are due to be completed at the site by the summer in the predominantly unionist Killynure estate, on the outskirts of south Belfast.

Former Mayor of Castlereagh, UUP councillor Michael Henderson, said that meetings had been ongoing between OakleeTrinity, Killynure Community Association and elected representatives.

"A couple of flags have come down at the entrance, but no-one knows who put the flags up in the first place and no-one is willing to take them down," he said.

"Everyone living near the site is appalled. We are hoping that it can be resolved. Everyone is welcome in Carryduff, regardless of race, colour or creed."

Tenants who had been offered the first batch of 20 new homes were due to complete a site visit yesterday.

In a statement, OakleeTrinity said it was "continuing to engage with the local community" and added that it "remains committed to resolving this issue."
