Property: Castlederg site manager wins top award for house building excellence

Sam Sayers from Castlederg, Co Tyrone is celebrating a major milestone after being crowned NHBC Pride in the Job Supreme Award Winner for the Small Builder Category.

Sam was presented with the award last Friday at a gala ceremony in London for his work at Mount Bernard Rise in Castlederg.

Organised by NHBC, the UK’s leading new home warranty and insurance provider, Pride in the Job celebrates site managers who have achieved the very highest standards in house building. It is the most highly regarded competition in the house-building industry and a prestigious benchmark for exceptional site managers.

Supreme winner Sam is the managing director of S&DS Construction Ltd and is thrilled to have received the award, saying “it was an absolute privilege to have won this award with the talent in the UK housing industry competing against 8,000 other site managers across England, Scotland and Wales”

“Being recognised as the number one house builder in the UK for builders registering up to 50 houses a year is simply amazing and a moment I will never forget,” Sam said.

“The hard work and dedication has paid off and is a great benefit to everyone at the company - without them this would not have been possible.”

Sam expressed huge thanks to all his employees, subcontractors, suppliers and the NHBC team.

Every single person has done their bit in helping to contribute towards this award and Sam wants to give recognition to all of the excellent team he has working alongside him.

Judging for the awards, in its 42nd year, saw each site manager assessing six key areas: consistency, attention to detail, leadership, interpretation of drawings and specifications, technical expertise and health and safety.

Judges remarked that the standard of finished homes were immaculate and commented on Sam’s keen eye for details.

The competition is split between three categories: small, medium, and large house builders, plus a multi-storey category for site managers working on projects of five storeys or more for multiple occupancy.

A series of regional events took place throughout autumn 2022, to announce the Seal of Excellence and Regional Award winners and celebrate the achievements of the Quality Award recipients.

The ceremony which took place in London on 20 January was the culmination of the Pride in the Job 2022 Awards, with the Supreme winners announced.

Commenting on the Awards, NHBC Chief Executive Steve Wood said: “For more than 40 years Pride in the Job has been an important part of our work to help drive construction quality.

“Winning site managers tell us that it inspires them to give a little extra and to strive harder for ever-higher standards of house building.

“At NHBC we believe that the calibre of the site manager and the way they inspire their site team has the greatest influence on the quality of the finished home. By promoting friendly rivalry, showcasing best practice, and rewarding excellence, Pride in the Job supports the delivery of homes of the highest quality.

“Congratulations to all the 2022 Pride in the Job Award winners.

“The role of the site manager is more demanding than ever, with new methods of construction, new technologies and an increased pace of regulatory change. They are an inspiration to us all and should be very proud of the quality of new homes they are creating.”
