SHOPPERS have been urged to used high street gift cards as soon as possible after two more well-known brands went into administration.

Debenhams announced yesterday that it will file for administration for the second time in a year, while Cath Kidston filed a notice of intention to appoint administrators on Friday April 3.

Debenhams is still accepting gift vouchers online, but the Consumer Council warned "this may change" and anyone with one "should spend it as soon as possible".

Cath Kidston's administrators Alvarez & Marsal (A&M) say they have been instructed to find a buyer for the business.

It would be at the new company's discretion whether to honour gift cards or vouchers if they bought the brand.

Consumer Council chief executive John French said where may be other means of getting a refund but recommended spending cards and vouchers where possible.

"Check with the person who bought it if it was purchased using a credit or debit card,"they may be able to secure a full refund from their card issuer.

"Over the last year the high street has seen many well-known retailers going into administration. The Consumer Council would encourage consumers who have gift cards or vouchers for any retailer to use them as soon as possible and to always check the expiry date."
