THE cost of heating oil in Northern Ireland has fallen to its lowest level in a year.

The average price of 500 litres of kerosene is now £374.50 (75p per litre).

It means the price of a 500 litre order is now around £100 cheaper than it was at Christmas.

A market survey carried out by The Irish News on Tuesday with more than 70 suppliers around the north confirmed prices are at the lowest level since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in late February 2022.

The average order of 900 litres was £662 (74p per litre) on Tuesday, more than £200 less than the 900 litre average in the week to December 22 2022, when prices hit £878.

Home heating oil prices rocketed in early March 2022, hitting a peak of more than £660 for 500 litres and almost £1,200 for 900 litres.

Prices have fallen by 44 per cent since then, but are still considerably higher (42 per cent) than 18 months ago, when 500 litres cost just £216.

The roll out of the £600 energy scheme in mid-January is thought to have driven sales of heating oil in recent weeks.

The average price of Brent Crude Oil on Tuesday afternoon was just over $83 per barrel.
