OFFICIALS at Belfast City Council have signed off on a proposal to construct 85 serviced apartments in a ten-storey building on the Dublin Road.

John Smyth Estate’s plans for the site will result in the demolition of the present buildings at 57-59 and 61-63 Dublin Road, which includes the popular Kitsch Restaurant.

The company was last year granted planning permission for 71 apartments and a ground floor restaurant on the site next to The Gallery Apartments.

But those plans were redrawn at the outset of the Covid-19 pandemic, with the developer seeking to include 85 serviced apartments in the same space, which will mix short and long term occupancy.

The ground floor venture will switch to a café space, with part of the space previously allotted to the restaurant now earmarked for a resident’s gym on the first floor.

Industry monitor Construction Information Services Ireland estimates the project will involve an investment of around £4.2 million.
