Five-goal Castlewellan get it right this time

ST Malachy's, Castlewellan bounced back from defeat in last year's final to win their first Senior Medallion Shield in Pearse Og Park, Armagh, defeating St Colm's, Draperstown with key scores around half-time.

The Down team, however, were on the back-foot for the first quarter with fullback Dearbhla Magee fending off a number of Draperstown attacks. St Colm's, though, managed points from Caroline Rafferty and Lauren McKenna before Megan Sloan eventually got Castlewellan off the mark with a point in the 15th minute.

Rosie McEldowney then goaled for Draperstown in the 20th minute to put her side 1-3 to 0-1 ahead. However, by the time St Colm's scored again they were five points down and chasing the game.

Chloe McCusker opened Castlewellan's goal account just before the break and Niamh Rodgers and Megan Sloan brought their tally to 3-2 by the 38th minute.

Draperstown rallied with a point from Caroline Rafferty and then a goal from Megan McKenna. But St Malachy's immediately broke downfield and Gemma Greeran fired a brilliant effort to the top right hand corner. With Megan Sloan adding another goal in the 55th minute the Medallion Shield was on its way to the Town for the first time.

Bronagh McAuley and the midfielders, Caroline Rafferty and Lauren McKenna, had great games for St Colm's, but their attack found Castlewellan's Dearbhla Magee a real obstacle.

St Malachy's always looked as if they had that little bit more scoring potential and the goals proved killer blows to Draperstown's aspirations.
