Shiels allays fears over thumb injury

ANTRIM hurler Paul Shiels is confident that a broken thumb will not prevent him playing in the All-Ireland Qualifiers, writes Paddy Heaney. The Dunloy clubman confirmed on Twitter that he had sustained the injury. But when contacted by The Irish News, Shiels insisted that he would be fit for Antrim's next game."We will get it patched up. It will be okay. Three weeks will have passed by the time of our next game so it should be fine," said Shiels. The preliminary round of the Qualifiers takes place on June 22, with Antrim, Westmeath, London, Carlow, Waterford, and the losers of this weekend's Leinster quarter-finals, Offaly v Kilkenny and Wexford v Dublin, all in the draw, which will take place on Monday. One team will receive a bye into phase one on June 29, with the three preliminary round winners joining them.Antrim cannot be drawn against Westmeath, and London cannot be paired with Carlow as those teams met in the Leinster Championship.
