Hibernian hang on to claim points in late drama; wins for Aberdeen and Livingston

Hibernian 3 Hamilton 2

Hibernian boss Jack Ross believes Kyle Magennis is worth the risk as he closes in on a deal for the injured St Mirren captain.

Magennis was in the Easter Road stands to see Hibs claim a 3-2 win over Hamilton and should complete a move to Leith within the next 24 hours.

The capital club have agreed a six-figure fee with Saints but Ross admits the move comes with a degree of peril given the midfielder has not played since rupturing knee ligaments back in January.

But the former Buddies boss knows enough about the 22-year-old - who is back in light training - and his qualities having given him his first taste of first-team action back in 2016 to convince him he is worth the gamble.

Ross said: "I don't think it's quite formalised yet but I would hope we would have it all concluded by tomorrow morning.

"I'd be delighted and excited if we could do it. He's a player I gave his debut to at St Mirren and I've known him since he was a youngster. It would be a great addition for us.

"He fits the profile we had with Kevin Nisbet - a young Scottish player we think can improve and grow with us and potentially benefit us too in the future.

"There's always a risk with every signing but we feel everything Kyle has attribute wise is that he's worth it."

Hibs looked to be on Easy Street at Easter Road as Paul Hanlon followed up a Nisbet double to put Ross' team three up.

But Ross Callachan netted a penalty before a late Ryan Porteous own goal made the final moments tense.

And it could have been all so different had Marios Ogkmpoe not missed a penalty while Accies were 2-0 down.

But even that sloppy finish could not take the shine off Nisbet's display as he followed up a classy finish with a sublime header to make it six goals in eight appearances since moving from Dunfermline in the summer.

And Ross believes it will not be long before he is knocking on the door of the Scotland squad.

"If you judge Kevin on goals his return is really good but the overall play is really good and that's the part that's maybe taken people by surprise," he said.

"We should be excited to have a good Scottish striker, not just at Hibs but as a country as well.

"I don't like to force players on Steve Clarke because he's got experience in the game but Kevin has given himself the opportunity. You don't get up around being top scorer in the Premiership without good reason and I think he'll stay up and around that."

Accies boss Brian Rice bemoaned his side's defending.

He said: "I'm just disappointed because in the first half we gave far too much respect to Hibs - you're coming here, there's no fans here, so have a go.

"Our start cost us. The goals we lost were unlike us, because we've been pretty good defensively.

"But in the second half I thought we were excellent. That's the best we've passed it in the second half, getting into wide areas, but our final ball again is something we need to work on."

Aberdeen 2 St Mirren 1

Lewis Ferguson scored an added-time winner as Aberdeen came from behind to beat Scottish Premiership strugglers 2-1 St Mirren.

The visitors gave a good account of themselves and Ethan Erhahon's wonder-strike early in the second half gave them a deserved lead.

But it only served to spark life into a below-par home side though, and the Dons levelled with 20 minutes remaining through Marley Watkins.

A share of the spoils looked likely until Ferguson popped up to hit a low shot that seemed mis-hit into the bottom-left corner to secure his side all three points.

Saints' Jak Alnwick was the busier of the keepers in the early stages, his early stop from Jonny Hayes perhaps a little less than convincing and allowing Niall McGinn the chance to follow up, only for Marcus Fraser to block.

Alnwick was involved again a few minutes later as he raced off his line to head a long ball clear but left team-mate Conor McCarthy requiring treatment after a heavy collision between the pair.

And the goalkeeper was forced into another save, this time low to his right, after an advantage allowed by referee Gavin Duncan allowed Ferguson a sight of goal from the edge of the area.

But as the first half wore on, the visitors came more into the game and it took a timely intervention from Tommie Hoban to deny Jon Obika as the striker stole in behind Ash Taylor from a Lee Erwin flick.

A minute later, Cammy MacPherson's cross came off the forehead of Andrew Considine and spun goalward, but to the relief of the Dons defender the ball looped over the bar.

And a MacPherson free-kick, headed by Obika, fell to Erwin on the angle eight minutes before the break, but his angled effort was held by Joe Lewis at the second attempt.

The visitors' endeavour was rewarded in the early stages of the second half when the unlikely figure of Erhahon struck a sweet 25-yard drive that arrowed past Lewis and into the top-left corner.

Aberdeen changed things up in order to find a way back into the match, with McGinn and Scott Wright replaced by Connor McLennan and Ryan Edmondson, and the game began to swing back their way.

Watkins had a sighter after 69 minutes, sending a low shot straight down the throat of Alnwick, but two minutes later he found the back of the net, firing into the bottom-left corner after a move conducted by Ryan Hedges.

Bruce Anderson came off the bench and passed up a decent opportunity before Ferguson struck a mis-hit shot from the edge of the box that caught out Alnwick and trickled into the bottom left corner.

Dundee United 1 Livingston 2

Gary Holt claimed Livingston's performance in their late win over Dundee United at Tannadice was "synonymous" with the West Lothian club.

Nicky Clark curled in a 25-yard free-kick for the hosts in the 18th minute before United's number two keeper Deniz Mehmet, making a rare appearance, made several good saves to keep a sturdy Livi side out.

However, the Taysiders' resistance was broken in the 53rd minute when defender Jon Guthrie clipped a shot in from eight yards and in the 90th minute the United defence found themselves outnumbered and Alan Forrest was able to tap in a pass from substitute Matej Poplatnik.

The win took Livingston above Dundee United and into sixth place in the Premiership and Holt said: "For 90 minutes I thought we dominated the game.

"I don't think we were under any pressure, Robby McCrorie didn't have a save to make.

"That performance was synonymous with who we are and that's something that is really pleasing.

"We are good at scrapping, good at hunting in packs, we're good at pressing people to make mistakes and have that never-say-die attitude.

"It would have been unjust not to come away with three points.

"But you have to fight, scrap and battle and I thought we had that in abundance and we still had the composure to score the winning goal."

A disappointed United boss Micky Mellon said: "It is a sore one for us.

"It was a tough game, it was direct, a lot of free-kicks and corners and set plays, turned round continuously.

"I understand that you have to be better at finding the way that you want to play but sometimes you just have to get on with it, win your headers and knock-downs and keep battling and on the whole without creating a lot of chances, we did that.

"To lose a goal like that at the end is a sore one.

"The manner of the way we lost it is disappointing but all we can do is come back next week and keep trying to improve."
