1938: Two players, Leonidas for Brazil and Ernst Wilimowski for Poland, scored four goals each in the World Cup match at Stade de la Meinau in Strasbourg. The final score was 6-5 to the South Americans.

1968: Alan Mullery became the first man to be sent off in a full international for England in a European Championship match in Florence, which Yugoslavia won 1-0.

1999: Britain's Joe Calzaghe retained his WBO super-middleweight title with a unanimous points verdict over Australia's Rick Thornberry in Cardiff.

2000: Weatmeath beat Laois 1-12 to 0-11 in the quarter-finals of the Leinster SFC Championship.

2005: Paddy Bradley scores 1-10 as Derry beat Monaghan in the quarter-finals of the Ulster Championship.

2009: Holland beat England by four wickets in their Twenty20 World Cup Group B match at Lord's.

2010: Italy's Francesca Schiavone won the women's French Open title after defeating Australia's Samantha Stosur 6-4 7-6 (7/2) in the final.

2011: Rafael Nadal won his sixth French Open crown by beating Roger Federer 7-5 7-6 (7/3) 5-7 6-1.

2014: The Football Association announced that Sir Trevor Brooking would retire from his role as director of football development following the World Cup.
