ON THIS DAY

1937: World heavyweight boxing champion Joe Louis was taken the distance in the first of the 25 defences he would make of his title. His opponent was Welshman Tommy Farr, who survived all 15 rounds at Madison Square Garden.

1987: Larry Tompkins kicked 11 points as Cork routed Galway, 0-18 to 1-4, in their All-Ireland Senior Football Championship  semi-final replay at Croke Park.

1987: Lloyd Honeyghan knocked out American Gene Hatcher in Marbella, Spain, to retain his world welterweight title. Honeyghan won in just 45 seconds, then the quickest world title stoppage in history.

1991: Bob Beamon's 23-year-old world long jump record was broken during the World Championships in Tokyo. Carl Lewis surpassed Beamon's leap of 8.90 metres with 8.91m, but that was not valid for the record books due to wind assistance. Then his American team-mate Mike Powell jumped a massive - and legal - 8.95m to clinch the gold medal. It has not been surpassed.

1998: Damon Hill secured the Jordan team's maiden grand prix win at a rain-soaked Spa-Francorchamps, with team-mate Ralf Schumacher in second.

2001: Manchester United completed the signing of French World Cup winner Laurent Blanc.

2004: Manager Sir Bobby Robson was sacked by Newcastle.

2005: Michael Owen passed a medical at Newcastle ahead of signing a four-year contract with the club.

2008: St Helens won the Challenge Cup with a 28-16 victory over Hull at Wembley.

2011: Britain's Jessica Ennis-Hill won silver in the heptathlon at the World Championships in Daegu. In November 2016 Tatyana Chernova was stripped of the gold medal after failing a retrospective doping test, meaning the Briton was upgraded to gold.

2012: Liverpool and England striker Andy Carroll joined West Ham on a season-long loan. The deal was soon made permanent.

2015: Manchester City signed Wolfsburg attacking midfielder Kevin De Bruyne for a then club-record fee, believed to be around £54million, with the 24-year-old signing a six-year deal.

2016: England scored a world-record ODI score of 444 for three in beating Pakistan by 169 runs at Trent Bridge. Alex Hales' 171 was England's highest-ever individual ODI score. The win saw England take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series.
