UUJ overwhelmed a poor Trinity outfit 4-17 to 0-2 in yesterday’s Freshers A football clash at Jordanstown.

Armagh senior Paddy McKeever, Tyrone minor Gavin Wylie (1-2), Fiachra Woods and Oliver Gaughan (1-1) hit the Poly goals while Stephen Donnelly top scored with 0-8.

Other UUJ scorers were Antrim minor captain Paddy Logan (0-4), Nigel Clancy (0-1) and Ciaran Devlin (0-1). Jordanstown’s first year crop can be expected to have it much tougher when they tackle Queen’s next Wednesday.

Elsewhere, Coleraine University have Down man Brendan Ward and Beragh’s Barry Conroy back in contention for Saturday’s clash with St Mary’s at St Teresa’s in Belfast (2.30).

Both missed UUC’s encouraging victory over Dundalk last week.

Wing half-back Joe Doran could be ruled out of the contest because of a university field trip which he is scheduled to undertake this weekend. Armagh youngster Dara Edwards starred in last week’s victory by bagging 1-5 of Coleraine’s 2-7 total.

St Mary’s will be without Derry star Paul McFlynn and Brian Taggart who both have flu plus Colm Cunningham who is ruled out with shin splints.

However, Armagh county player Alan O’Neill and Ciaran McCrossan both return after missing St Mary’s comprehensive defeat by UUJ last time out.

WEATHER permitting, the Bank of Ireland MacRory Cup begins this weekend with holders St Colman’s Newry scheduled to open their campaign against St MacCartan’s in Crossmaglen.

The Violet Hill school look well-placed to mount a vigorous defence of Ulster Colleges GAA’s blue riband given that Aidan Fegan, Liam Doyle, Brendan Kearney, Shane Allen and Damien McGovern of last year’s squad return this season.

Another promising player in the Colman’s line-up is Damien McGovern - son of former Burren and Down star Tommy McGovern

BALLYMENA'S Dermot Hamill last night lifted the Ulster Intermediate featherweight title after coming through a blistering fight against St Agnes’s Jim McComb.

Hamill enjoyed a 10-point advantage, winning 23-13, and although he skilfully evaded the all-action McComb, the favourite was forced to take a count in round three.

He was subject to two thumping rights from McComb as he led 13-5 after two rounds.

McComb was to win round three 5-4.

But in the fourth and final round, despite bleeding from the nose and having to contend with McComb’s persistence, Hamill continually picked off his man to justify his favourite's tag before this bout.

Dermot’s cousin, lightweight Thomas J Hamill, took the second honour of the night back to the All Saints, Ballymena club when he defeated Karl Hogg of Larne. .

He was grounded on the canvas in the third round but his opponent’s slim hopes of an upset were immediately dashed as it was a slip.

At that stage the Ballymena man led his former clubmate by 7-3 and went on to win 21-13.

William Waite lifted the first Intermediate championship silverware, the bantamweight title.

Waite, a cousin of professional bantamweight Tommy Waite, defeated All Saints’ clubman Gary Morrison 9-8 after four rounds.
