1918: Italian racing driver Alberto Ascari was born. The first man to win successive Formula One world titles in 1952 and 1953, he lost his life while testing a new Ferrari at Monza in 1955.

1930: The first World Cup football match was contested when France met Mexico in Montevideo. A crowd of about 1,000 witnessed the historic match, which France won 4-1.

1995: Former Arsenal manager George Graham was banned from football for a year by the English Football Association after being found guilty of misconduct charges relating to transfer 'bungs'.

1997: Wexford beat Kilkenny on a scoreline of 2-14 to 1-11 to win the Leinster Senior Hurling Championship final.  

1998: Arsenal favourite Ian Wright signed a two-year contract to join West Ham.

2009: Manchester City announced they had reached agreement with striker Carlos Tevez over a proposed move to the City of Manchester Stadium.

2010: Steve McNamara left Bradford Bulls by mutual consent, freeing him up to take over as full-time England rugby league coach with immediate effect.

2012: The Scottish Football League announced that Rangers would start the 2012-13 season in the Scottish Third Division.

2012: John Terry was cleared of racially abusing Anton Ferdinand at Westminster Magistrates' Court.

2014: Germany won the World Cup by beating Argentina 1-0 after extra-time in Rio de Janeiro.

2015: Claudio Ranieri was appointed first-team manager at Leicester, replacing the sacked Nigel Pearson.

2016: Sunderland announced that the Football Association had approached them for permission to speak to Sam Allardyce about the England job, and that they had allowed their manager to do so.
