1924: The FA Cup final between Newcastle and Aston Villa at Wembley was the first time the game had been an all-ticket affair.

2001: Scotland defender Colin Hendry was banned for six international matches and fined for elbowing San Marino substitute Nicola Albani in the throat during a World Cup qualifier at Hampden Park. It turned out to be his 51st and last cap before retirement.

2005: The Royal & Ancient Club voted in principle to allow women to compete in the Open Championship.

2008: Tottenham signed Croatia midfielder Luka Modric from Dinamo Zagreb for a deal worth around £16.5million.

2013: Former Pakistan and Essex bowler Danish Kaneria lost his appeal against a life ban after being found guilty of spot-fixing.

2017: Joey Barton was banned for 18 months by the Football Association for breaking its betting rules.
