ON THIS DAY



1975: Georges Carpentier died, aged 81. He had been one of boxing's most versatile champions - having by the age of 19 held European titles at welterweight, middleweight, light-heavyweight and heavyweight. Carpentier became world light-heavyweight champion between 1920 and 1922.



2000: Manchester United hit five past Southampton in front of a new Premiership record crowd of 67,581.



2003: Leeds announced a record pre-tax loss of £49.5million, taking their debts to £78million. On the pitch they lost 3-1 to arch rivals Manchester United as striker Alan Smith was embroiled in controversy for throwing a bottle back into the crowd after it landed on the Elland Road pitch.

2005: The second International Rules test between Australia and Ireland in Melbourne was marred by a number of ugly incidents before the home side claimed the trophy.

2007: Dunloy were crowned Ulster Club SHC champions after a 2-14 to 2-8 win over Dungiven at Casement Park, Paddy Richmond and Paul Shiels with the goals.

2008: Tony Adams was named the new manager of Portsmouth. He parted company with the club the following February.



2009: Portsmouth were placed under an embargo which prevented them from registering new players; Former Test umpire David Shepherd died following a long battle with cancer.

2011: Ireland recorded a convincing 80-36 win over Australia in the first International Rules test in Melbourne, Leighton Glynn and Eamonn Callaghan with their goals.



2012: Loughgiel eased past Portaferry in the Ulster final on a 2-25 to 0-12 scoreline.
