ON THIS DAY 

1851: The Royal Yacht Squadron of Great Britain put up the One Hundred Guinea Cup as the prize for a race around the Isle of Wight between the American yacht America and the British contestant Aurora, which the Americans won. In 1870 this prize was offered as a challenge trophy under the name of the America's Cup - now the best-known trophy in international yachting.

1964: BBC's Match of the Day television programme made its first broadcast, showing highlights of Arsenal's match with Liverpool.

2002: Neil Lennon announced his retirement from international football, having received a death threat before a Northern Ireland match.

2006: American sprinter Justin Gatlin was banned for up to eight years by the United States Anti-Doping Agency, after failing a drugs test for the second time in his career. It was later reduced to a four-year ban and Gatlin won bronze in the 100 metres at the 2012 London Olympics, silver at Rio in 2016, and silver in the same event at the 2013 and 2015 World Championships. He won gold at the 2017 World Championships.

2008: Usain Bolt claimed his third gold medal of the Beijing Olympics as Jamaica won the 4x100m relay final in a world record time of 37.10 seconds.

2009: Former Harlequins physio Steph Brennan, who was banned for two years for his role in the 'Bloodgate' scandal, resigned from the Rugby Football Union.

2012: Frankel, trained by Sir Henry Cecil and ridden by Tom Queally, won his 13th consecutive race when he triumphed in the Juddmonte International Stakes at York.

2015: Mo Farah won the 10,000 metres title at the World Championships in Beijing, becoming then the oldest ever global winner at the event at the age of 32.
