1927: The Ryder Cup was inaugurated when the United States and Great Britain met at Worcester, Massachusetts. The Americans won by seven points.



1931: Freddie Fox rode Cameronian to victory in the first televised Epsom Derby.



1981: Shergar won the Derby by a record 10 lengths.



1991: Thomas 'The Hitman' Hearns beat Virgil Hill to win the WBA light-heavyweight crown - it was his sixth title at a different weight.

2001: Paddy Bradley and Enda Muldoon combined for 1-7 as Derry saw off Antrim at Celtic Park to set up an Ulster semi-final with Tyrone.



2002: Brazil beat Turkey 2-1 in the World Cup group stages. Rivaldo scored the winning penalty and was also involved in the dismissal of Hakan Unsal, clutching his face when Unsal kicked the ball against his legs.



2004: Tottenham announced that France coach Jacques Santini would become their new manager after Euro 2004. Santini did not last long, however, resigning in November for "personal reasons".



2008: FIA president Max Mosley won a vote of confidence with a clear majority at an extraordinary meeting in Paris. The Englishman's position had come under threat after lurid allegations about his private life were published in a Sunday newspaper.



2012: Donal O’Hare and Conor Laverty struck goals as Down recorded a 2-10 to 1-8 Ulster Championship win over Fermanagh at Brewster Park.

2013: Chelsea confirmed Jose Mourinho as their new manager on a four-year contract.



2015: Rafael Benitez was appointed as Real Madrid's new coach on a three-year contract.



2016: Three-time world heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali died at the age of 74.
