On this Day - February 13 1956: Former Arsenal and Republic of Ireland midfielder Liam Brady is born

ON THIS DAY 

1989: Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Mohammad took 12 hours to score 163 runs against New Zealand in Wellington, including a record 11 and a half hours to reach 150.

1991: BBC television commentator Ron Pickering died aged 60. A renowned coach, he guided Lynn Davies to the 1964 Olympic long jump gold medal.

1992: Liverpool signed a then-record £4million four-year sponsorship deal with brewers Carlsberg.

1999: Arsenal offered to replay their FA Cup third-round clash against Sheffield United after a controversial Marc Overmars goal had decided the original tie.

2009: The second Test between England and West Indies was abandoned after 10 balls when the playing surface at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua was deemed unfit. The match was relocated to the Antigua Recreation Ground two days later and ended as a draw.

2012: Wolves announced they had sacked manager Mick McCarthy.

2013: Andy Hunt resigned as British Olympic Association chief executive.

2016: Ireland saw their RBS 6 Nations title defence dealt a telling blow with a 10-9 defeat to France, while Wales beat Scotland 27-23 in Cardiff.

Gareth Bradshaw (GAA) - half-back for the Galway senior footballers, and winner of Connacht SFC medals in 2008 and 2016.

Liam Brady (soccer) - former Arsenal and Republic of Ireland midfielder, remembered for his exceptional footballing ability, and in particular his brilliant left foot, Dubliner Brady enjoyed a career which took him from Arsenal to Juventus, Sampdoria, Inter Milan, Ascoli and West Ham United. He also played 72 times for the Republic of Ireland, scoring nine goals, born 1956.

Pierluigi Collina (soccer) - Italian former referee who oversaw the 2002 World Cup final, born 1960.

Paul Deacon (rugby league) - former Bradford, Wigan and Great Britain scrum-half, born 1979.

Anna Watkins (rowing) - London 2012 gold medallist, born 1983.

Jamie Murray (tennis) - Scottish doubles specialist and brother of Andy, winner of the mixed doubles title at Wimbledon in 2007 and men's doubles at the Australian Open and US Open in 2016, born 1986.

Kevin Strootman (soccer) - Roma and Holland midfielder, born 1990.

Mamadou Sakho (soccer) - Liverpool and France defender, currently on loan at Crystal Palace, born 1990.

Memphis Depay (soccer) - Former Manchester United and Holland winger, now at Lyon, born 1994.
