1938: Willie Hall scored three goals in three and a half minutes for England against the Republic of Ireland, a record in a home international. Hall added two more in a 7-0 win.
2003: England beat France 24-7 in the semi-finals of the 2003 Rugby World Cup with Jason Leonard making a world record 112th appearance for the winners.
2005: England lost their first Test match since regaining the Ashes, going down to Pakistan by 22 runs. Australia, Trinidad & Tobago, Switzerland, Spain and the Czech Republic all qualified for the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany.
2009: Mercedes-Benz returned to Formula One as they bought a 75.1 per cent share in Brawn GP.
2009: George Burley was sacked as Scotland manager.
2010: Aston Villa confirmed out-of-contract former Arsenal winger Robert Pires would sign for them. He was released by the midlands club when his short-term deal expired in the summer of 2011.
2011: Liverpool striker Luis Suarez was charged with using abusive and/or insulting words and/or behaviour towards Manchester United's Patrice Evra. He was later banned for eight matches; Martin Johnson confirmed he had resigned as the manager of the England rugby union team.
2015: UEFA confirmed Euro 2016 would remain in France after the country's hosting of the tournament came under scrutiny following terrorist attacks in Paris three days earlier.
