1926: The largest crowd ever for a boxing match - 120,757 - gathered to watch Gene Tunney and Jack Dempsey's heavyweight clash at the Sesquicentennial Stadium in Philadelphia.

1934: Galway’s first season wearing maroon jerseys proved successful as their footballers claimed the All-Ireland title, scoring 3-5 to Dublin’s 1-9.

1945: Cavan lost their second All-Ireland final in three years as Cork defeated them 2-5 to 0-7 at Croke Park.

1956: The All-Ireland Hurling final is eventuall played after it was delayed following the outbreak of polia in Cork. The Rebels lost the final to Wexford in what was Christy Ring’s last appearance in a final.

1973: Dessie McKenna captained Tyrone to the All-Ireland Minor Football title with the Red Hands seeing off Kildare in the final.

1986: Liverpool thrashed Fulham 10-0 in their League Cup second-round first-leg match.

2008: A Football Association arbitration hearing ruled in favour of Sheffield United in their claim for compensation from West Ham over the Carlos Tevez affair.

2009: Former Arsenal and Tottenham defender Sol Campbell left Notts County by mutual consent having played just one first-team game for the League Two club.

2010: Boxer Ricky Hatton's licence was withdrawn by the British Boxing Board of Control after they laid charges of "bringing boxing into disrepute arising out of incidents of alcohol and drug abuse by him which had been reported widely across the media". Hatton, who won world titles at light welterweight and welterweight, lost his comeback fight to Vyacheslav Senchenko in 2012 and subsequently announced his retirement from boxing.

2012: Donegal, under Jim McGuinness, secured their second-ever All-Ireland title following a 2-11 to 0-13 win over Mayo.

2013: Uncapped trio Gary Ballance, Ben Stokes and Boyd Rankin named in England's 17-man squad for the Ashes series in Australia.

2013: Noel King was appointed as the Republic of Ireland's interim senior manager following the departure of Giovanni Trapattoni. Martin O'Neill replaced King in November.

2014: Liverpool had to come through an epic 14-13 penalty shoot-out to get the better of Sky Bet Championship side Middlesbrough at Anfield and book their place in the fourth round of the Capital One Cup.
