1588: Sir Francis Drake took part in the most famous game of bowls in history on Plymouth Hoe when he received news that the Spanish Armada was off the coast of Cornwall.

1948: The first Olympic Games since 1936 - the Games had been suspended due to World War II - opened at Wembley Stadium.

1973: British driver Roger Williamson died in a fire at the Zandvoort Circuit in Holland, his second Formula One race.

1978: Penny Dean swam the English Channel in a record seven hours 40 minutes.

1989: Cuban high jumper Javier Sotomayor became the first man to clear eight feet (2.44m) at San Juan, Puerto Rico.

1995: Monica Seles beat Martina Navratilova at an exhibition match in Bucharest, Romania. It was Seles' first tennis match in two years after she was stabbed in the back by a Steffi Graf fan during an encounter between the two in Hamburg.

1998: Cliftonville were defeated 8-0 by Slovakian side FC Kosice in a Champions League preliminary round.

2001: Galway defeated Derry 4-23 to 1-11 in the Quarter-Final of the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championships at Croke Park, Dublin.

2006: Westmeath beat Galway 1-8 to 0-10 in a Round 4 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship qualifier at Pearse Stadium, Galway.

2006: Kerry beat Longford 4-11 to 1-11 in a Round 4 All-Ireland Senior Football Championship qualifier at Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney.

2010: Great Britain's Phillips Idowu won the gold medal in the triple jump at the European Championships in Barcelona.

2012: Chinese shooter Yi Siling won the first gold medal of the London 2012 Olympic Games in the women's 10m air rifle.

2015: James Anderson took an Ashes career best of six for 47 as England dominated the opening day of the third Test against Australia at Edgbaston.

2015: Famed racing commentator Sir Peter O'Sullevan - known as the 'Voice of Racing' - died at home in London after a long illness, aged 97.
