1879: Dwight F Davis, the man responsible for tennis' Davis Cup, was born. He died in November 1945.
1919: France's Suzanne Lenglen became the first non-English-speaking women's champion at Wimbledon. It was the first of five successive titles for Lenglen.
1975: Arthur Ashe beat fellow American Jimmy Connors to become the first black men's champion at Wimbledon.
1980: Bjorn Borg won his fifth consecutive men's title at Wimbledon, beating John McEnroe in a five-set thriller in the final.
1992: a crowd of around around 8,000 watched as Mayo defeated Sligo 1-14 to 0-19 in the Connacht Senior Football Championship semi-final at McHale Park in Castlebar.
2008: Venus Williams beat sister Serena to win the Wimbledon women's singles title, while Britain's Laura Robson won the girls' singles crown by overcoming Thailand's Noppawan Lertcheewakarn.
2009: Roger Federer beat Andy Roddick to win the Wimbledon men's singles title.
2014: Petra Kvitova claimed her second Wimbledon title, beating Eugenie Bouchard in just 55 minutes.
2014: The Tour de France got under way in Yorkshire with Marcel Kittel winning stage one as Mark Cavendish suffered a late crash which forced his withdrawal before the next morning's stage began in York.
2015: Lewis Hamilton won the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
