1968: Two-time Formula One world champion Jim Clark was killed when his Lotus spun off the track and hit a tree in a Formula Two race at Hockenheim.

1990: Great Britain suffered their first home defeat by France since 1967, losing the rugby league Test 25-18 at Headingley.

1993: National Hunt jockey Peter Scudamore retired after riding 1,677 winners.

1997: No joy for Ulster sides in the National Football League quarter-finals with Laois slamming Derry 4-10 to 1-13, eventual NFL title winners Kerry crushing Down 1-18 to 0-10 and Tyrone going out to Cork on a 2-8 to 0-9 scoreline.

2007: Greg Rusedski announced his retirement from tennis following his Davis Cup doubles victory for Great Britain alongside Jamie Murray against Holland.

2011: Rory McIlroy carded a seven-under-par 65 to hold the lead after the first day of the Masters at Augusta. However, the Hollywood man's victory bid would ultimately end in disappointment when he blew a four-shot lead heading into the final round to finish 10 strokes behind winner Charl Schwartzel.

2012: Laura Trott won gold in the women's omnium at the Track Cycling World Championships in Melbourne. Jason Kenny won silver and Sir Chris Hoy bronze in the men's sprint.


Anti-elitism protester Trenton Oldfield caused the Boat Race to be dramatically halted after swimming between the Oxford and Cambridge crews.

2013: Southampton announce England international striker Jay Rodriguez would miss the World Cup with a ruptured cruciate ligament ruling him out for six months.

2015: FIFA announced Football Association chairman Greg Dyke returned the watch given to him by the Brazilian Football Association during the 2014 World Cup and that the FIFA ethics committee has therefore closed proceedings in respect of a possible breach of the FIFA code of ethics.

Cullen made his first appearance for the team during the 2003 Championship and also represented Ireland in the International Rules Series in 2004, 2005 and 2008. He was appointed High Performance Manager for Dublin GAA in January 2016, born 1984.

James Ryan (gaelic games): Born in Garryspillane, Ryan lines out at forward for the Limerick senior hurling team, born 1987.
