Colour counts for fly guys

THERE are those who will argue that the colour of a salmon fly is not important, and that size is all that really matters.

They may be right - but many of the most successful salmon flies in the autumn and early winter share similar shades of colour and, if nothing else, they look right at this time of year. Rich reds, burnt orange, a little yellow and black with some gold look good in the water and in many an angler's eyes.

In the same way as blues, silver and maybe a little magenta seem right for the bright days of spring and summer.

Yellow and black seem to be the connecting shades for all seasons but something resembling the collection of shades of orange, black, gold and brown of the likes of an Agivey Wye Bug will be on most experienced salmon anglers' casts over the next month or two.
