Top drawer Harty gets Irish off to flier

JAMIe hARTY produced a top drawer performance to get Ireland off to a winning start at the 11th european Schoolboy Championships in Dublin yesterday.

The Limerick light-fly, whose twin brother Jason will be in action today, scored an unanimous decision Over Miroslav Gorol to march into the last-eight at the Citywest hotel.

Scotland, the only one of the home nations - Wales didn't enter, england were suspended by AIBA - besides Ireland to enter the tournament lost two bouts yesterday.

Ryan Ball and Callum Stuart dropped unanimous decisions to Russia's evegeni Chamlygin and Oleksandr Kravets of the Ukraine.

The Russians, who finished on top of the medals table at the 2012 european Schoolboys Championships (Ireland finished second), won three from three yesterday.

"We delighted that Jamie got us off to a winning start, said Irish team manager Paddy Gallagher.

"It was a good performance from Jamie."

Ireland, who have won 50 medals at this level since the inaugural Championships in Rome in 2003, will be back in action at the 19-nation tournament today.
